Goeritz came from a Jewish, German background and was active as a painter, sculptor and architect. He often combined these three disciplines in his works. Goeritz studied art in Berlin, after his study he travelled to Morocco and Spain. He finally left Europe and arrived with his wife in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1949. Goeritz was influenced by German expressionism, Minimalism and Dada. After the death of his wife, he created a series of works titled Messages, consisting of paintings of golden colors through which he tried to reach his wife on a spiritual level.
