Carrington was a Surrealist émigré artist, originally from England. She came from a rich family, which she escaped early in her life. Leonora fell in love with German Surrealist artist Max Ernst and became friends with the European Surrealist circle including André Breton. Content wise Carrington’s work is highly influenced by magic, alchemy, and Irish myths and stories that she knew from her youth in England. She came to Mexico in 1942, there she got her first solo show organized by GAM in 1950. In Mexico Carrington became close friends with Remedios Varo and Kati Horna, they all lived in the same neighborhood of Colonia Roma.
