About

Edward Burtynsky was born in 1955 in St. Catharines, Ontario. He studied Graphic Art at Niagara College in Welland and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography from Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario. His works are included in the collections of over fifty major museums around the world including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California. In 2005 he was recognized with a TED award and in 2006 he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, the nation’s highest civilian honor. In 2007, he was the subject of the award-winning documentary Manufactured Landscapes. This year sees the release of a second feature documentary Watermark, a Toronto International Film Festival Official Selection. Burtynsky lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
