About
Peter Beard (1938–2020) was a multi-disciplinary artist known for his photography, painting, and writing, with a focus on the African landscape and its complex beauty and tragedy. Born in New York City, Beard's passion for nature began in his youth and deepened during a formative trip to Africa at age 17, where he documented endangered rhinos. His iconic photographs, such as The End of the Game (1965), blend art and environmental activism, exploring the impact of human encroachment on nature. Beard’s portraits of celebrities and models also conveyed a raw emotional depth, revealing the intersection of beauty, identity, and time. His work was widely exhibited, including at the Blum Helman Gallery (1975) and a major retrospective in Paris (1996), leaving a lasting legacy in both art and conservation.
