Unreal Reality series
In his Unreal Reality series, Stephan Schnedler elegantly plays with the viewer’s perception of space, scale, and materiality, weaving an atmosphere that feels at once intimate and expansive. His works hover in the balance between the familiar and the unfamiliar, where surfaces and structures suggest a world we think we know, yet one that resists certainty.
Appearing at first as an architectural study, the series explores the delicate interplay of light and shadow, and the way these forces shape our experience of space. Minimalist rooms and modernist surfaces are rendered with such precision that their emptiness begins to feel charged inviting the imagination to wander. What is shown becomes inseparable from what is withheld, and the silence of these spaces opens into a meditation on presence and absence.
By stripping away human figures and narrative detail, Schnedler directs our attention toward the subtleties of perception itself. The viewer is asked not only to contemplate the geometry and atmosphere within the frame, but also to consider what might lie beyond it what hidden continuations, unseen rooms, or invisible lives could extend into the spaces just out of view.
Unreal Reality invites us to look deeper, to linger in the tension between reality and illusion, and to discover how light, shadow, and materiality shape not only the environments around us, but also the way we inhabit them.
