About
Danish artist Jacob Gils is internationally recognized for his innovative photographic practice that merges technical precision with painterly abstraction. Using a unique multi-exposure technique, Gils overlays numerous photographs of the same subject, building layered compositions that hover between figuration and abstraction. This method creates a shimmering, almost tactile surface where details dissolve into vibrant impressions, inviting viewers to experience the world as fleeting and multifaceted.
His celebrated series Portraits of Trees captures the beauty, resilience, and vulnerability of nature, presenting trees as both timeless monuments and fragile symbols of our ecological future. In recent years, Gils has expanded his practice to include large-scale textile installations, creating immersive environments that evoke the fluidity of nature and invite a meditative, sensory experience.
Gils’ works are held in international museum and private collections and have been showcased at major art fairs across Europe, the US, and Asia. In 2024, he received the prestigious Erarta Prize, the largest award ever given to an artist and their gallery, further cementing his presence on the global art stage.
Museums:
The National Museum of Photography in Oslo, The National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen, Fotografiska Stockholm, Museum of modern art in Bogota, Nanjing Museum of Visual Arts in China and The Danish Cultural Center in Beijing China.
