Wifredo Lam (Cuba 12/08/1902 - France 09/11/1982)
About
Wifredo Lam (1902–1982) was a Cuban painter and printmaker, and a major figure in twentieth-century modern art. Born in Sagua la Grande, he trained in Havana and spent many years in Spain before moving to Paris in 1938, where he developed close connections with Pablo Picasso and André Breton. His return to Cuba in 1941 deepened his engagement with Afro-Cuban culture. Bringing together Cubist and Surrealist experimentation with African and Caribbean imagery, he developed a distinctive language of hybrid human, animal and plant forms. His practice encompassed painting, drawing, printmaking and ceramics.
