Patrick Hughes (Birmingham 1939 - )

About

Patrick Hughes is an important British Pop and Surrealist artist whose sculptural paintings appear to be typically two-dimensional at first glance but change radically when you walk by them. Hughes’ elaborate trompe l’oeil effects cause the sensation of movement, including the opening and closing of doors, views of distant landscapes and corridors and walls receding or vanishing. These extraordinary spectacles are due to Hughes’ remarkable use of false perspective and the art of illusion. Many paintings contain images of contemporary artworks or refer to literature and architecture. Using physical sensation, Hughes’ creates awareness that history and perception play key roles in the formation of ideas and our selves, and that there is no constant but flux.
