John Fraser was born in 1952 in Chicago, he lives and works in St. Charles, USA.
John Fraser rummages through flea and antique markets searching for his “material“; he scours antiquarian bookshops and watches out for yard sales “around the corner”. He uses old books, or to be more exact, book bindings and endpapers, looking for traces of times past. Whether stained or yellowed and even if the coloured elements are only partially visible – this is what stimulates the artist to create something new. This reduced, even meditative, language of forms in his compositions requires from the viewer the willingness to be drawn into the work and with it to look for what has been lost, forgotten and what remains. The delicate collages that Fraser sensitively creates from his treasures belong to the most subtle works of this kind and have survived even in the golden age of the colourful American art world for more than 25 years.
