Ivan Rickenmann (Colombia 1965 - )

About

Rickenmann is a Colombian painter and draftsman born in Bogota, 1965 who studied fine arts in L’École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs from 1987 to 1991 in Paris. In 1993 he returned to his hometown where he currently resides and works as a drawing and painting professor in the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and the Universidad de los Andes.
In his oeuvre, Rickenmann seeks to rescue the character, personality, and the strength of banal objects and the environment. Even though his drawings are a stark reminder of urban spaces, Rickenmann also exhibits an interest in the natural landscape. His drawings are beautiful and discreet—meticulously detailed. They transport us to another place and encourage us to live in the moment. While his work is not trying to be photorealistic nor hyper-realistic, the spaces and objects are re-created and have a presence that, in a way, gives them life. There is certainly a type realism in his drawings, but it responds to the personality of the objects, to their presence, and to their aesthetic.
